Why visit Rouen?

Discover fascinating history

Capital of Normandy and famous for its imposing Gothic cathedral, Rouen was one of the principal cities of the Anglo-Norman dynasties which ruled England and much of mainland France during the medieval period.

And so, in many ways, a French school trip to Normandy is a very appropriate first step into France for English schoolchildren.

On your French school trip to Rouen, you’ll find the city offers plenty of history to discover, including the story of Joan of Arc.

The French heroine was imprisoned, put on trial and executed in Rouen, and visits to the Joan of Arc Museum and Tour Jeanne d’Arc will help your students to understand why she is such an important historical figure in France.

Rouen is also an excellent choice of destination if you want your students to explore French art.

The Musée des Beaux Arts is a highly regarded institution with collections dating from the 15th century to modern day.

And you can even take a trip to nearby Giverny, where your students will love exploring the gardens in which Monet produced some of his most celebrated works.

Get your students talking

Most of our groups who choose a French school trip to Rouen choose to include French lessons at our partner language school in the city.

This is a particularly good option if your students are preparing for GCSE or A-level exams because lessons are taught in closed groups and can be tailored to meet your learning objectives.

All the teachers are native French speakers and lessons are taught on a total immersion basis.

To complete the total immersion experience, we can offer accommodation with carefully selected host families who will encourage your students to practise speaking French with them on an everyday basis. Of course, other accommodation options are available if preferred.

In fact, the whole cathedral is a real mix of architectural styles, as it has continuously been built and rebuilt over more than 800 years.
