Five Free Activities to Explore in New York City

Looking to explore the bustling, innovative city of New York on a budget? Well, look no further. Here are 5 fun-filled activities you can enjoy that certainly won't break the bank.

Whether you're travelling in a group or with students, these activities are guaranteed to both excite and educate, without costing you a penny.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab your MetroCard and let's dive straight into the vibrant city that never fails to wow.

Little Island

Experience one of New York's most beautiful and natural places - Little Island. Indulge in a 2.7 acre pier with a gorgeous view of the Hudson River, or engage in a little bit of theatre with its 687-seat amphitheatre. There really is something for everyone.

Set among a beautiful landscape of shrubs and greenery, you're guaranteed a thrilling and relaxing experience away from the hustle and bustle of the city that never sleeps. Plus, bring snacks, as there are plenty of places to sit down and enjoy a packed lunch (we know that every detail matters when it comes to creating a meaningful and safe experience for your group).

Chelsea Market

From the relaxing, natural scenery of Little Island, make your way through the crowded streets of Lower Manhattan to the famous Chelsea Market.

Located in the heart of the Meatpacking District, here you'll have the opportunity to indulge in New York's famous food culture, with stalls ranging from independent food stalls to more well-known vendors.

Top tip? Look out for fun freebies, as well as a quaint bookstore.

High Rise

As you make your way from Chelsea Market, belly full (hopefully), you'll arrive at the High Line. Historically, what used to be a high-rise train track, has now been turned into gorgeous gardens with epic views of the New York skyline.

There's even some punchy street art, for those with a taste for creativity.

As you walk among the abundance of green space, make sure you keep an eye out for the incredible eateries, such as the Shake Shack, which serves classic American cuisine - perfect for a shake and a sit-down.

Staten Island Ferry

Wanting to visit one of New York's most iconic landmarks for free? Staten Island Ferry's not only completely free to use and offers jaw-dropping views of the New York skyline.

Being one of the last ferries still in use in New York, the iconic orange boat will transport you on a thrilling adventure sailing right through New York Harbor - and it's one of the best ways to see the iconic Statue of Liberty.

Make sure you have cameras ready, as this is an unforgettable photo opportunity. Look out for the Brooklyn Bridge in the distance too. Did you know that this engineering marvel opened in 1883, making it one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States?

9/11 Memorial

Next, is a visit to the 9/11 Memorial. Take a step back in time as you're reminded of a moment in history that changed the world forever.

Take a seat or wander around the gardens where you'll find the twin reflecting pools that stand in the footprints of the fallen towers. The site boasts an incredible 16 acres, making it the perfect place for a stroll and reflection.

You can also visit the museum itself (although this does come at an extra cost). The 9/11 Memorial Museum tells the story of 9/11 through varied narratives and a collection of artefacts, providing you with an unforgettable insight into the tragic events of that day.
