Cornwall is a fantastic destination in which to explore the topic of sustainability. As one of the top destinations for tourism within the UK, which is also home to some fragile ecosystems, the county has long been a leader in sustainability. There are many initiatives designed to promote sustainability and avoid over tourism.
On your geography school trip to Cornwall, your students will have the opportunity to visit a recycling centre where they’ll learn more about waste management strategies, sustainability and resource management. And they can also take part in a self-led beach clean, to play their part in protecting Cornwall’s coast.
Your students will also visit the Eden Project, where they can take part in a curriculum-linked workshop. There’s a great range of topics available, but if you’re visiting Cornwall on a sustainability school trip, you may like to choose one that focuses on sustainability or eco-tourism. And if you want to make your school trip to Cornwall more sustainable, we highly recommend visiting in the autumn or winter, rather than in the summer.
Dubai is a fantastic option for a geography school trip focusing on sustainability. Although it has limited natural resources in terms of food, water and building materials, Dubai experienced rapid urbanisation in the latter part of the 20th century after the discovery of oil in its territorial waters.
Your students will be able to learn more about the consequences of this unplanned expansion. They’ll also discover how and why Dubai is now a world leader in sustainability research and development.
Alternatively, in Tenerife, your students can learn more about the impact of food production on the island by visiting one of its many banana plantations, before visiting a futuristic housing development that boasts zero carbon emissions.
Costa Rica offers the chance to explore one of the world leaders in eco-tourism. Costa Rica has incredible biodiversity and its government has recognised the need to protect the incredible habitats there by ensuring that it is at the forefront of sustainable tourism.
And in Iceland or the Azores, your students can find out how these geologically active countries have harnessed the natural geothermal energy to provide a sustainable energy resource which, in Iceland, not only heats houses and greenhouses, but even the pavements of Reykjavik!
As geographers, we know that sustainability is high on your list of priorities. You understand the precious, fragile nature of our planet and part of your job is to convey the importance of protecting our planet to your students.
A school trip can really help them to understand this. Wherever you choose to go, your students will learn more about the challenges that that destination is facing and how people there are working hard to protect the local environment.
And if you’re worried about the sustainability of your school trip, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us – we’ll work with you to ensure that your trip has the maximum impact on your students and the minimum impact on the environment.
Getting out of the classroom and seeing the reasons why sustainability is important could really inspire your students to want to do more in their own lives.
Although climate change and the environment are starting to be discussed more in the media, we are still quite sheltered from the impact we’re having on the Earth in our daily lives.
Having the opportunity to see what people are doing to help protect their local environment could be hugely inspiring for your students, whether it ignites a passion for wanting to do more to help, or even inspiring a future career.
Originally founded by former teachers, we understand the value of geography school trips and how to make them successful.
Your trip will be completely tailor made, to ensure that it meets your specific requirements and learning objectives. And we’ll be on hand throughout the process to answer any questions you have.
In fact, we’ll be with you every step of the way, from now until you return home at the end of your trip. While abroad, you’ll be able to reach us with just one phone call, at any time of the day or night. And, with this comprehensive level of support while you’re away, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy immersing yourself in geography as much as your students.
