Design and technology is a hands-on subject, so what better way to demonstrate the applications of it across the world than to take your students on a trip?
Design and technology school trips are a great way to inspire your students to consider a future in this field. They’ll see that the subject will open up a variety of exciting options for them. And carefully chosen visits mean they’ll also learn more about the design process and see it in action.

On a trip, your students can explore and compare old and new technology in design museums, get up close to some of the world’s most impressive buildings and witness the end results of design projects in the real world.
New York and Berlin are certainly global centres for design and technology, offering plenty of opportunities for inspiration.
School trips to New York can include a visit to Parsons the New School for Design, which counts many world-renowned fashion designers among its alumni. You could also visit the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, which has a fascinating collection of historic and contemporary designs.
Trips to Berlin, while closer to home, will certainly be no less exciting, with visits to the Deutsches Technikmuseum, the BMW Motorcycle Plant and even an architecture tour.
Your students will have the unforgettable opportunity to experience design and technology in the real world. They’ll explore how products are designed to meet customer needs, find out more about the manufacturing process and they could even explore some emerging technologies!
In Berlin, we offer some exciting opportunities to visit big brands to learn more about their design and manufacturing processes.
For example, you could visit the BMW Motorcycle Plant, where your students can see the entire process of building a motorbike. And at the Science Center Medical Technology, they’ll find out how design and technology is being used to improve patients’ mobility.
In New York, Samsung 837 offers your students the opportunity to explore its latest products and technology.
And in both cities, your students will also learn more about the history of design and technology, with visits to the Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin and the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York.
One exciting thing about these trips is that your students will see some incredible examples of where your subject could take them – possibly inspiring their future careers!
Your students will see the many different industries in which they could use their design and technology skills, from architecture to fashion, communications and gaming to transport.
For example, if you choose to visit New York, you’ll be able to visit one of the world’s most well-regarded art and design schools, Parsons the New School for Design. The first art and design school in the US, alumni include Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Anna Sui and Ai Weiwei, among many, many more.
A guided tour of the school and its facilities could get your students thinking about taking their design and technology studies further. This school offers programmes in fashion design, advertising, communication design, architectural design, strategic design and many more areas. A visit here could help your students see how many avenues your subject will open up for them.
Not only will they find this inspirational, but it could also contribute to greater engagement when you return to the classroom.
