Explore one of northern France’s hidden gems – the charismatic city of Amiens.
The gorgeous, historic city of Amiens is in a prime location in northern France, making it the perfect base for school trips. In addition to all the city's attractions (we’ll get to those in a minute), you’ll be within easy reach of the spectacular Opal Coast and the WWI battlefields of the Somme.
Just a 90-minute drive from Calais, you won’t be spending all your time on the coach. And also 90 minutes away is the fantastic Parc Astérix which, as well as being an awesomely fun theme park, also offers the opportunity to explore the rich culture of Franco-Belgian comics.
But enough talk about what’s nearby. Exploring Amiens itself is a real treat. From the home of the famous author Jules Verne to the floating gardens of Les Hortillonnages, there’s so much to see and do here. You won’t be able to miss the epic cathedral – it’s the largest in France and one of the most exquisite examples of Gothic architecture you’ll ever see. And make sure you take some time to stroll through the medieval district of Saint-Leu, with its colourful, half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and bridges crisscrossing the Somme (no wonder it’s sometimes referred to as the ‘Venice of the North’).
