Why should you join a choir?

Improve your musicality

When you join a choir, it gives you the opportunity to improve your own singing skills. But you will also need to improve your listening skills, to ensure that you stay in tune and in time with the choir. Your appreciation of harmony will intensify and you will become a better musician for your experience with the choir.

Boost your self-confidence

Anyone can learn to sing, but many of us have been told we’re not talented enough or have had our singing criticised by those around us. Singing in a choir gives you permission to make a noise with others and realise that that sound is beautiful. Plus, your singing skills will naturally improve as you rehearse with your choir and learn from those around you.

Make new friends

The great thing about singing together is that it’s probably the greatest icebreaker. The joy you all feel as you sing, in combination with the experience of working as a team to create something beautiful, will mean bonds between you and your fellow choir members will develop quickly. Singing in a choir has been shown to enhance brain function, strengthen the feelings of togetherness and also releases endorphins and oxytocin, which reduces stress levels and prevents depression.

Get a great workout

When you sing, your diaphragm opens up and your breathing rate slows and deepens. This oxygenates the blood and increases the production of white blood cells, which helps to prevent illness. This is a benefit for everyone but is especially helpful if you have a respiratory disease or lung condition, such as asthma.

ur posture improves and your stomach muscles get a good workout when you sing. This can improve your core strength, which can mean that you're less prone to back injuries as you age.

Joining a choir is an excellent exercise in teamwork – only by working together can you create something truly beautiful.

The sense of belonging to your choir and the togetherness that you experience when you are rehearsing or performing together will also boost your overall sense of wellbeing.

Of course, when you join a choir, you can usually expect to perform at some point.

Depending on your choir, you may be able to perform locally, in other parts of the UK or even abroad. Wherever you perform, your performance experiences will be unforgettable – supporting each other with the nerves you all share prior to the performance and the exhilarating celebration of a good performance are moments that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Improve your memory

Joining a choir means you will have to learn new songs on a regular basis and all the while you’ll be creating musical memories. It’s been shown that these types of memories actually create broader neural pathways than other types of memories. This is why hearing an old song can bring back really vivid memories.
