Why should you join a band?

Improve your musicality

If you want to improve your musicality as a musician, joining a band can really help. As well as giving you the encouragement to continue to improve your own instrumental skills, you’ll also have to learn to listen to the rest of the band and follow the conductor closely.

You’ll also be surrounded by musicians with a variety of experiences and will have the opportunity to learn from them.

Boost your self-confidence

Performing in a band will allow you to build up your performance experience and confidence while surrounded by the support of your fellow band members. And when you do perform in front of an audience, you’ll be building inner confidence and self-esteem that will help you in other areas of your life.

You’ll also learn to deal with stressful, nerve-wracking situations while enjoying the support of your band members. This will help you to learn how to manage these situations and keep yourself calm and confident when you’re confronted with stressful situations in other parts of your life, such as exams and job interviews.

Make new friends

When you join a band, you join a group of people who may come from diverse backgrounds, but all with at least one thing in common – their love of music. You’ll spend lots of time working closely together during rehearsals to create something beautiful and this will quickly bring you closer together. The shared nerves before a concert and the exhilarating buzz of a great performance are all things that will bring you closer as a group and leave you with some great new friends!

Improve your mental health

We all know that music is fantastic for calming us down and taking our minds off life’s stresses and strains. But by playing in a band, you’ll also enjoy a sense of togetherness and being part of something that is incredibly beneficial for your wellbeing.

Become more responsible

Being a member of a band is a great way to demonstrate how responsible you are. You’ll need to take care of your instrument, keeping it in a playable condition. And you’ll need to take responsibility for continuing to improve your own skills, in order to keep up with the rest of the band. You’ll also need to commit to regular rehearsals and be available for concerts. So, when you come to interview for future jobs, for example, you’ll have some great, recognised examples of how responsible you are.

Be part of a team

One of the best parts of joining a band is the opportunity to be part of a team. You’ll all have to put in a lot of hard work in rehearsals to ensure that concerts and performances are excellent. You’ll develop your teamwork skills and, again, have a great example to draw upon in job interviews and applications when asked about whether you’re a team player.

Enjoy unforgettableperformance experiences

When you join a band, you can be pretty certain that, at some point, your band will perform. This could be locally, in other parts of the UK or even abroad. But wherever you perform, you’ll enjoy unforgettable performance experiences that you get to share with your friends in the band. The exhilaration of these moments will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Improve your cognitive skills

Performing in a band offers a great, regular workout for your brain and can really improve your cognitive skills. Reading music and playing an instrument boosts hand-eye coordination and improves concentration and visual recognition.

It’s also thought that musical training raises your IQ and improves spatial-temporal intelligence. It also boosts creativity and has been shown to improve memory.

Studies have shown that students wh

o join musical ensembles do better in reading and maths, and cope better with pre-test and exam stress, helping them achieve more academically.

Make yourself stand out

When applying for university or jobs, you need to make yourself stand out from the other applicants. One great way to do this is by joining a band.

As we’ve mentioned previously, being part of a band shows that you are able to take on a high level of responsibility and are able to stick to the commitments that you make. It also shows that you have the social skills to integrate with a group of people and be a team player.

It’s fun!

Above all, joining a band is fun and will be a positive and uplifting experience!
