For many, Anne Frank’s diary is our first introduction to the horrors of the Holocaust. And it's such an iconic book that many of us still have a copy on our bookshelves, something that Anne would have loved.

Through her diary, we get to know Anne and see that she was a very typical teenager dealing with the stresses and strains of growing up. Many of the issues she discusses in her diary are issues that we all deal with during our teenage years, and that helps us to identify with her and her story.

However, unlike us, she and her family are forced into hiding in the Netherlands, to escape persecution for being Jewish. And through Anne’s intimate entries into her diary, we learn what life was really like for those living under Nazi occupation.

Teaching the Nazis and the Holocaust?

A school trip to Amsterdam offers the opportunity for your students to visit the house in which Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis. This and other visits and activities will help your students to better understand what life was like under Nazi occupation.
