So, our five reasons to study PE are:
1. It will make them better team players
Your students will have plenty of practical opportunities to develop their teamwork skills while taking part in sporting activities.
PE and sports give students the most obvious experience of the benefits of teamwork – and so this is the easiest example for them to understand. During their PE lessons, they will often have to work together with their classmates to achieve a shared goal.
They will have to learn to communicate effectively, both verbally and non-verbally. And they will have to learn to be flexible, sometimes taking leadership roles and other times taking a step back and following the lead of someone else. They will learn to compromise with each other and support one another in order to achieve their goals.
Being able to work in a team is something that employers will look for in almost any role and so students who develop these skills during their school careers will undoubtedly reap the benefits in their future careers.
2. It will make them more resilient
Sport is all about trying, often failing or coming up short, learning, resetting and going again, and this process will make your students more resilient.
Resilience is something that your students are going to need to develop in all aspects of their lives. PE in school offers students a safe environment in which to develop this all-important skill.
And the students who are able to confidently fail at something, learn lessons and try again are going to be the ones who advance quickly in their careers.
3. It will give them a greater drive for self-development
That same process that will make your students more resilient will also fuel their drive for self-development. Being able to take on feedback and honestly assess their own performance in order to improve is a rare and sought-after skill in many careers.
When it comes to Key Stage 4 and onwards, PE and sport are all about learning how to understand the factors that underpin physical activity and sport and using this to improve performance. This is a skill that can translate into so many different areas of their life.
This process will help your students understand that their own development, whether it’s physical performance or anything else, is completely within their control. This understanding is an incredible gift and gives them both ownership of their own development and self-confidence, both of which will help them to stand out to future employers.
4. It will make them better communicators
Your students will need to improve their verbal and non-verbal communication skills in order to work better with their team whether they’re training or competing.
PE and sports actually require a huge amount of communication, both verbal and non-verbal.
When playing team sports, communication is key to achieving our shared goal – which is more often than not to win the game. We may well have discussed tactics and strategies ahead of the game with our teacher, or coach. And when we’re on the field of play, we’ll need to be in constant communication with our teammates.
And soft skills like excellent communication are often sought after by employers.
5. It will make them better problem solvers
Your students will have to develop tactics and strategies to win matches and learn to develop training programmes to improve their own and others’ performance.
From Key Stage 4 onwards, PE and sport require that students begin to understand how the physiological and psychological state affects performance – and how they can develop skills, techniques and training programmes to improve performance.
This practical experience of identifying problems and finding solutions to improve performance will mean that your students become highly skilled at problem-solving. This is one of the most sought-after skills by employers and is a transferable skill that will also be incredibly useful for them in other aspects of their lives.
