Of course, the number of hotels offering sole occupancy is small, but if this is something that’s really important to you, we’ve picked four of our favourites to give you a good idea of what to expect.
Austria
Hotel Posthof – [Bad Kleinkirchheim]
• Family-run hotel• Spacious accommodation• Beautiful location just 20 minutes’ drive from the slopes
If you have a group of 50-75 and want to ski in Bad Kleinkirchheim, then you can enjoy sole occupancy of the Hotel Posthof, availability permitting.
The hotel is located in Millstatt am See, which, if you’ve ever visited Zell am See, will feel quite familiar, as it’s also a beautiful lakeside town. The hotel is within walking distance of the centre and the shops, which means that a relaxed late afternoon/evening walk into town is certainly possible.
A quieter location than Bad Kleinkirchheim itself, Millstatt am See is a safe destination for school groups. Bad Kleinkirchheim is only a 20-minute drive from the hotel, so it’s possible to visit the town, and the slopes are just a further 5 minutes drive away.
The hotelier is very flexible and experienced in working with groups, which is really great for school ski groups who will be made to feel very welcome here.
There is a large restaurant, so you can all sit down to dinner at the same time, and you can use the restaurant later in the evening to host a quiz or other similar entertainment. There is also a ski and boot room at the hotel, which is really convenient.
Berghof Mitterberg – [Schladming]
• High-quality hotel• Excellent facilities• Just 20 minutes drive from the world-class resort of Schladming
Another great option for groups of 50-75 is the Berghof Mitterberg in Matzling. This hotel will allow your group to ski the world-famous resort of Schladming, which is often out of budget for schools!
If you’re planning a trip during Easter, we would highly recommend this resort and hotel – the skiing is usually fantastic in Schladming at that time of year and the Dachstein glacier is close too.
The location is spectacular, in the beautiful meadows and with views of the Grimmig mountain. There isn’t much in Matzling itself so, if you did want to go shopping, you would need to head to Schladming itself. However, it’s only a 20-minute drive to the traditional, unspoilt centre of Schladming.
And, in reality, the hotel’s fantastic facilities mean that you’re unlikely to want to head out to Schladming more than once or twice in the evenings. The hotel boasts its own bowling alley and fitness room, as well as table tennis and football. There’s also an impressive indoor swimming pool with spectacular panoramic views! Plus, there’s a ski and boot room to store your equipment.
Italy
Hotel Miramonti – Claviere
• Family-run hotel• Within walking distance of main ski area• Access to the Milky Way ski area
It’s rare to find hotels that offer sole occupancy in Italy and the Hotel Miramonti does so for groups of at least 65, all within walking distance of the lifts, providing your group access to the Milky Way ski area. It’s also walking distance to the centre of Claviere and so really conveniently located.
And when you don’t want to head into the resort centre, you can use the hotel’s bar and restaurant area to run any in-house après-ski activities.
Plus, its convenient location means that you can enjoy hot lunches at the hotel, so walking in ski boots and carrying skis really is kept to a minimum by staying at this hotel.
This hotel is family-run, so you can be certain you’ll receive a typically warm Italian greeting. Its elevated position means it offers some fabulous views of the surrounding mountains.
Hotel Fiocco Di Neve – Pinzolo
• Just 350m from the main gondola• Sauna and games room• Traditional mountain chalet-style accommodation
The Hotel Fiocco di Neve in Pinzolo offers sole occupancy for larger groups of at least 75. Just 350m from the main gondola providing access to both Pinzolo and Madonna di Campiglio, this is another great hotel in a great location.
The hotel is also just a short walk from the centre of Pinzolo, where there are cake and ice cream shops, a cinema and a couple of supermarkets.
The restaurant offers the opportunity to sample some local delicacies from Trentino, as well as many of the national dishes that go down so well with schoolchildren.
As well as child-friendly food, you’ll receive a warm, hearty welcome from the hotelier and his staff, who are very experienced in welcoming groups.
